Recording a Route
Route Recording captures your live GPS position as you walk, drive, or move, automatically building a route that traces exactly where you've been. When you're done, save it to the group's shared map.
Route recording works in both online groups and Radio groups.
Start recording
- Tap MENU in the command bar at the bottom of the map
- Tap RECORD
- A recording bar appears at the top of the screen with live stats: distance, duration, and point count
Move around. Your path draws on the map in real time as you go.
During recording
- You can use the rest of the app normally while recording, chat, view pins, check locations
- The path is visible on your own map as you move; other members don't see it until you save
- Recording continues in the background, you can lock your screen or switch apps and the track keeps recording
To record with the screen locked, Flaresat needs Always location permission:
- iOS, Settings → Flaresat → Location → Always
- Android, Settings → Apps → Flaresat → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time
Pause and resume
Tap Pause in the recording bar to temporarily stop tracking without ending the session. Tap Resume to continue from where you left off. Pausing is useful when you stop moving and don't want a stationary cluster of points.
Stop and save
When you're done:
- Tap Save & Stop in the recording bar
- Give the route a label (required, at least 2 GPS points needed)
- Tap Create
The route is saved to the group map and syncs to all members immediately. In Radio groups, the route is transmitted over the mesh.
Tap Cancel (✕) instead to discard the recording without saving.
Tips
- For best GPS accuracy, make sure Location Services is enabled and set to Always for Flaresat
- On web/PWA, GPS accuracy depends on your browser and device hardware, most laptops and desktops lack a GPS chip
- Long sessions: disabling auto-lock in your device settings keeps the map visible and saves battery compared to wake-wake cycling
- Recording and Live Share can run simultaneously, your track builds in the background while your teammates see your live dot
After saving
The saved route behaves like any other route on the map, teammates can tap it to view details, navigate to the trailhead, or edit and delete it. See Editing & Deleting Items.
