Inviting Members

Every group has a unique invite code. Admins can view and manage it; regular members can view and share it (when joining is enabled).

Online groups vs Radio groups

The invite code format depends on your group type:

Group typeCode prefixWhat the code contains
OnlineFLS-A long alphanumeric string that maps to the group on the server
RadioFLT-The full group config (name, subcode, color, icon) encoded directly into the code

Radio codes work differently because there's no server to look things up, the joining device reads everything it needs directly from the code.

Find your group's invite code

Admins see the full invite code management panel in Group Settings, including options to copy, share, rotate, and disable the code.

Regular members see a read-only Share Invite section showing the invite code and QR code, as long as joining is currently enabled. They can copy the code or share the invite link, but cannot rotate or disable it.

1
Open the map

Open the group's map.

2
Open settings

Tap Menu (☰) in the command bar, then tap Settings.

3
Find the code

The invite code appears in the Join Code section (admins) or the Share Invite section (members).

Share the invite code

Copy the code and send it however you like, text, WhatsApp, radio comms, word of mouth. Anyone with the code can join.

Your teammate joins by:

1
Open Flaresat

Opening Flaresat.

2
Start joining

Tapping + → Join a group.

3
Enter the code

Entering the code.

4
Join

Tapping Join.

In Group Settings, tap Invite Link to open the native share sheet with a URL that opens Flaresat directly to the join prompt. Tap the link on a device with Flaresat installed and the app handles the rest.

Join via QR code

Every group also has a QR code that encodes the same invite code. Scanning it skips manual code entry entirely.

To show your group's QR code:

  1. Open Group Settings
  2. The QR code is shown inline next to the invite code
  3. Tap it to expand or share the code directly

To scan a QR code and join:

  1. Tap + → Join a group
  2. Tap the QR icon to open the camera
  3. Point at the code, the app joins automatically

If camera permission is not yet granted, the app will request it when you open the scanner. If it has been denied, an Open Settings button appears inside the scanner, tap it to go directly to your device's permission settings without closing the scanner.

Rotating the invite code

Online groups only

Rotating invite codes is only available for online groups. Radio invite codes (FLT-) encode the group configuration directly and are not server-backed, there is no server-side invalidation mechanism for them.

Admins can generate a new invite code at any time. This invalidates the old code, anyone who previously copied it will no longer be able to join with it.

1
Open settings

Open Group Settings.

2
Rotate the code

Tap Rotate Code.

note

Rotating only affects future joins. Existing members are not affected.

Disabling the invite code

Online groups only

Disabling invite codes is only available for online groups. Radio invite codes (FLT-) are self-contained and cannot be disabled or invalidated from the server.

Admins can disable the invite code without generating a new one. This prevents anyone new from joining while keeping the existing code intact for later.

1
Open settings

Open Group Settings.

2
Toggle it off

Toggle Invite code off.

When disabled, the code is hidden and any join attempts with it are rejected. Toggle it back on to re-enable the same code.

Public Map (online groups only)

Admins can make an online group's map publicly viewable, anyone with the public link can view the map and its items without being a member or needing an invite code. They cannot chat, drop pins, or make any changes.

To enable:

1
Open settings

Open Group Settings.

2
Find access control

Scroll to Access Control.

3
Turn it on

Toggle Public Map on.

4
Share the link

A public link appears, copy and share it.

To disable, toggle Public Map off. The link stops working immediately.

note

Public Map is available for online groups only. Radio groups do not have this option.

Default role for new members

Anyone who joins via invite code or QR code gets the MEMBER role by default. An admin can change their role after they've joined. See Roles & Permissions →
